Carly Rae Jepsen's "Warm Blood" - Song Review

Before we get into the cruel fact that Carly Rae Jepsen is the most underrated pop artist of the past decade or that all the tracks released from her upcoming E•MO•TION so far have been true pop gold, songs Taylor Swift wishes she would have recorded for 1989, we have to understand that the Canadian artist has had a point to prove to the world ever since she topped the charts with the insanely catchy, unfortunately career ruining "Call Me Maybe" in 2012.

From the decent "I Really Like You" to the best pop song of 2015 "Run Away With Me", Jepsen's upcoming third studio album is the collection of 80s synth-inspired pop music we have all been waiting for... whether we knew it or not. The latest album cut, the dreamy, dark and weightless "Warm Blood" continues the artist's streak of home runs. Besides the moody, disco-tinged production, the highlight of the new track lies with Jepsen's convincing vocal performance, showing she's much better than her breakout hit.

"Warm Blood" opens with the confession that the artist is listening to her heart when it comes to the blooming relationship in front of her. Without her cautious guard up, Jepsen is ready to lose herself to the feeling of love, which sets off a rollercoaster of emotions. Those mixed emotions are represented beautifully by the contrasting optimistic songwriting and eerie production.

Though Jepsen's songwriting reads like that of a love struck teenager's diary, her delicate vocal performance shows incredible restraint, another impressive element to the overall finished product. "I would throw in the towel for you, boy, cause you lift me up and catch me when I'm falling for you," she sings on the track's infectious and endearing hook before some interesting low backing vocals come through to add a nice layered effect.

The new song does not compared to the bubbly personality shown on "Call Me Maybe" or "I Really Like You", instead Jepsen shows her true talent as she effortlessly glides off complex material and attention-grabbing 80s-styled production. "Warm Blood" falls into the same category of the darker "Curiosity" and the fearlessness of "Tonight I'm Getting Over You", some of the artist's better work. With the new release, it shows Jepsen's third album is shaping up to one of the best of 2015.

UPDATE (08/07/2015): And just like that Carly Rae Jepsen drops another shimmering gem from her upcoming third studio album. Written by fellow pop heavyweight Sia, the new "Making the Most of the Night" is a beautifully somber story of being given a short amount of time to show love for another. With heavy, dominating percussion, the song shares some qualities with the rest of the previously released teaser tracks, but is able to stand on its own as well. It gives a new, exciting layer to the upcoming album's overall sound.
