Leona Lewis' "Thunder" - Single Review

Turns out that the triumphant, Adele-sounding "Fire Under My Feet" from UK songstress Leona Lewis was not the lead U.S. offering from her upcoming fifth studio album, I Am. Sadness. Nope, the uptempo, clap-tastic track peaked at number 51 in the UK, but Lewis and her team have decided to treat U.S. fans with power ballad "Thunder" as the true lead single from the anticipated project.

While "Fire Under My Feet" was a bit of a departure from the artist's previous work, the new "Thunder" falls right in line with the huge, pop ballad anthems we have come to expect (and love) from Lewis ever since she exploded on the scene with "Bleeding Love" back in 2007. The new single is supported by a soulful piano and beautifully delicate vocals from the singer as she sheds details on an unappreciative boyfriend.

The empowering single does not shy away from using its intriguing, layered production to its advantage, it's a radio-friendly element that adds depth to the lyrical content. "With an empty heart, I am free again, for some things to start, some have to end," Lewis belts before the chorus of the mid-tempo offering powers through the speakers.

"Thunder" seems to hold many meanings for the talented artist. While some could easily categorize it as the typical post-breakup ballad, the underlying message could be aimed at Lewis' previous record label and how many may have counted the artist out following the release of Glassheart. The songwriting sounds personal and therapeutic, allowing the artist to share parts of her life that were kept in the shadows until now.

Though the song does not break any new ground for Lewis, it doesn't win any points for originality, it does soar thanks to an always on-point vocal performance from the former The X Factor champion. For the lead U.S. offering, "Thunder" could do wonders. It's a pop-leaning, emotional ballad that many listeners could blast and shout along to as they forget about their former lover or difficult life obstacle.
